Bronchiectasis
A long-term lung condition where the airways (bronchi) become abnormally widened and damaged. This damage makes it harder for the lungs to clear out mucus, leading to a buildup that can cause frequent infections. Over time, repeated infections and inflammation worsen the damage, making breathing difficult. People with bronchiectasis often experience a persistent cough, large amounts of mucus, shortness of breath and chest discomfort. It can result from past infections like pneumonia or tuberculosis, underlying conditions like cystic fibrosis or immune system issues.
What Causes Bronchiectasis:
- Congenital lung abnormalities
- Cystic fibrosis
- Immune system disorders
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
- Primary ciliary dyskinesia
- Autoimmune diseases
